Vladimir Guerrero Jr. watched another ball leave his bat at real speed Tuesday at Rogers Centre, only to see it land in a fielder's glove once again.
Guerrero's baffling struggles this season have produced one truly shocking number. He has yet to hit a home run at home all year.
The liner Tuesday, part of an eventual 5-3 win over Boston, traveled an estimated 395 feet to deep center, just a few feet shy of clearing the wall.
Despite the drought, Guerrero's confidence hasn't wavered.
"I believe in God, and when he decides the home run will come, it'll come," Guerrero told Mitch Bannon of The Athletic. "I know it's going to come. I just keep praying and keep working hard. Eventually, it's going to come."
He's dealt with real injuries this year, a back issue before the All-Star break and recent hamstring tightness, along with a swing that's simply been out of sync. Hitting coach David Popkins described it as an orchestra with some instruments out of tune.
Guerrero isn't blaming any of it, though.
"I feel good," he said. "But, like I say, sometimes you feel good and you still make outs."
Why home runs at home have never been a problem before
This isn't new territory for Guerrero historically. 71 of his 190 career home runs have come at Rogers Centre, and he hit three there in last year's postseason alone, including a no-doubt grand slam against the Yankees in Game 2 of the ALDS.
That history makes this season's drought even harder to explain, a genuine outlier for a hitter who's built so much of his career around producing in this exact ballpark.
Toronto sits at 58-63, last in the American League East, with an offense that ranks 29th in runs scored and dead last in OPS, numbers directly connected to Guerrero's own struggles at the plate.
Still, the Blue Jays sit just 2.5 games out of the final wild card spot, largely because of how weak the rest of the American League has been this year.
"We have this right in front of us," Guerrero said. "It's one game at a time. Whatever happens, happens."
