Josh Fleming, who pitched for the Blue Jays earlier this summer, has a new organization.
The left-hander is signing a minor-league deal with the Cardinals, according to the team.
He's headed to Triple-A Memphis to continue his season there as he looks to get another shot in the majors.
Fleming's path this year has bounced around quite a bit. He was with the Cubs organization most recently before this move.
Before that stretch, he got big-league time with Toronto earlier in the summer.
Three organizations in one season is a lot of ground to cover, even for a journeyman left-hander trying to stick somewhere.
Minor-league deals like this one carry no guarantees. They're an opportunity to pitch well enough to force a decision.
What this kind of deal usually means for a pitcher
For St. Louis, it's a low-cost look at organizational pitching depth heading into the stretch run.
For Fleming, Memphis becomes another audition, one more chance to show a big-league club he still belongs.
That's the nature of pitching depth in August. Players move through waiver claims, DFAs, and minor deals looking for the right fit.
His time in Toronto is now just one stop on a season that's taken him through multiple organizations already.
Whether the Cardinals see enough to add him to their 40-man before the season ends is still unknown.
For now, Fleming reports to Memphis and starts over again, chasing another shot at a big-league roster spot which will not be easy as his ERA currently sits a 12.00 in the majors across 3 innings pitched which all came with Toronto.
Do you think Josh Fleming gets another big-league opportunity before the season ends?
